Hunter S. ThompsonHunter S. Thompson has long been an icon for the cannabis industry and all counter-culture movements. His groundbreaking novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas inspired millions to think about drug use in a different light. Now, even though Thompson is deceased, consumers will soon be able to buy cannabis cultivated from Thompson’s legendary personal stash.

According to an interview with the Aspen Times, Anita Thompson, his late wife, preserved six different strains of Hunter S. Thompson’s cannabis following his 2005 suicide, in order to help preserve his legacy.

Now, her plan is to have a dispensary grow a special strain from Thompson’s cannabis under the “Gonzo” brand name.

“Since it became legal I get approached probably once a month by cannabis growers, dispensaries,” she stated in the interview with Aspen Times. “I’ve had probably 10 meetings in the last three years and I always ended up saying ‘no’ because it’s the same story every time: somebody wants to slap Hunter’s name on their strain. If I put Hunter’s name on somebody else’s strain, I can never go back and say, ‘No, this is the authentic one.’”

Currently the DNA is being extracted from Thompson’s plants so that clones can be made. This is part of Anita Thompson’s ongoing efforts to preserve the Gonzo tradition since her husband’s death. In addition to this strain, Anita preserves his work through a group called the Gonzo Foundation, by continuing to do journalistic work and by marketing Gonzo products and putting out books of Thompson’s unpublished work.

There is still no definite word out on when the cannabis will be available, or where, but Anita seems determined to move forward with preserving his legacy in the form of cannabis. Look for the product soon in Colorado, and possibly later  in the other legal states.
