Hip-hop is one of the forms of music
most richly rooted in cannabis culture, so it’s no surprise that Denver has an
awesome hip-hop and rap scene. One of the artists currently making their name
in local music and beyond is Gold Plated People, the two thirds Colorado, one
third L.A., rap trio.

The group, consisting of Tullie Bailey
from Denver, Black Pegasus from Colorado Springs, and now Andrew Nast, its
producer and DJ based out of L.A., has a long history together, and it always
manages to make the long-distance thing work.

“I am a Colorado native hailing from the
western slope,” Bailey states. “Andrew Nast bounces back and forth between Denver
and San Diego often, and Black Pegasus has always been in Colorado Springs.
This project has been a reflection of how music is created these days, through
many emails and phone calls. However, we definitely get it in when we get
together.”

The trio draws influence from many
different subgenres of hip-hop, is are happy with the way its approach has come
together over the years. “Our sound is definitely alternative or indie
hip-hop,” Baily states. “Black Pegasus and I both have roots in backpack style hip-hop,
where Andrew Nast has worked with everybody from KMK and Tech N9ne, OPM, Sen
Dog of Cypress Hill and Hilary Duff so he’s more less a facilitator. We find
inspiration in humanity whether it is the prostitute or the stoner. Their
stories are important to us; at the end of the day all our stories are the
same.”

Speaking of “stoners,” Gold Plated
People definitely derive inspiration from the herb as well. “We all definitely
support cannabis as a natural alternative to alcohol and other drugs. I personally
use cannabis occasionally, usually when I am recovering from some sort of
self-inflicted skateboarding injury or when I am having trouble
decompressing/unplugging from the matrix,” Bailey states. “We have collaborated
with several local dispensaries throughout Colorado on different events, dating
back to pre-legalization.

The group also manages to work
cannabis-related themes into its lyrics, as do many rappers with its passion for
the plant. “On our newest project set to be released in 2016 there are
definitely some cannabis references in the music,” Bailey reveals. “We are also
excited to be working with some major green-friendly artists creatively. Black
Pegasus has a solo project entitled Flobama, co-produced by the guys from
Potluck. One of the singles is a very powerful song entitled ‘Free the Weed.’
The song addresses the ridiculousness of marijuana prohibition.”

The group also has a new single out,
“Drop Top Porsche,” and its latest record #goldplatedpeople
will be out this month. The guys are looking forward to a Southwest and West
Coast tour this summer, and a special show at The Roxy in Denver on June 12.

We think hip-hop fans will love Gold
Plated People, and they believe in us as well. “We appreciate what you guys are
doing with CULTURE,” Bailey says. We
need more positive media outlets providing information where people find
community or common union with each other. So thank you for the opportunity to
be a part of that movement.”
