s the front man of hemp-hop group Los Marijuanos, PonyBoy
is a familiar face and voice in both the music industry and the cannabis
activism community. His sincere and contagious passion for all things cannabis,
along with his laid-back personality, quick wit, and genuine humility make him
a priceless figure for the cause. CULTURE
recently caught up with Ponyboy during a photo shoot in Las Vegas to get inside
the head of this mainstay in the cannabis movement.

You are one of the
most vocal advocates on the scene. Why are you so passionate about the cause of
cannabis and hemp legalization?

I just have so much love for the plant. The herb brings
everyone together. That’s one thing I appreciate about cannabis, but the main
thing is that it is the ultimate healing plant. It heals damn near everything,
and I will promote that until the day I pass away. I vow to teach people what
my forefathers (in the movement) have taught me. I stand on the shoulders of
giants like Jack Herer, Eddy Lepp and Dennis Peron. It’s my mission to spread
cannabis hemp-hop music to the masses to let them know what’s going on, because
they are our future. That’s what Los Marijuanos is all about.

You are a huge
supporter of the Free Eddy Lepp movement. Tell us a little about that.

I support Eddy. I love Eddy. This is about more than
marijuana, it’s about a person’s rights. I don’t want only my friend to get out
of jail. I’m not only fighting for Eddy, I’m doing this for people who are not
known, not famous. The regular people who get thrown in jail for growing a
plant and lose everything.

If you had to choose
between being a musician and being a cannabis activist, which would it be?

Music is in my blood, but with all that I’ve learned about
cannabis, that it isn’t just about getting high, I’d have to say I’d be an
activist. After all, there will always be music in the end! People tell me I’m
getting too old to keep doing this, to keep advocating and singing. But look at
Willie Nelson! I wanna be like Willie!

Not only do you
promote the medical and recreational use of cannabis, you are also outspoken on
the subject of hemp. For those who may not already know, can explain why this
is such a significant topic?

Hemp could be bigger than cannabis. It’s the house you live
in, the clothes you wear, the food you eat. All I am is a messenger sent by
Jack Herer to preach the gospel of hemp and let everyone know that it can, and
I believe it will, save the world. Just like Jack said it would. Just Google
the word hemp. You’ll see!

What is your advice
to those who are interested in cannabis activism?

Stand tall. Do what it takes to make it legal throughout the
entire U.S. When I started Los Marijuanos about 18 or 19 years ago, I didn’t
think I was going to become an activist for marijuana and hemp. Back then, I
didn’t even know what an activist was, and now I am one. I stand tall and tell
everyone what I’m all about. My children know about cannabis. They know hemp
can save the world. I teach them and I’m honest with them. They can make the
choice at age eighteen if they want to partake or not. It’s their choice and
they’ll be taught right.

This being our
Valentine’s Day issue, we’re exploring the role of cannabis in romance, sex,
and relationships. What are your thoughts and experiences on the subject?

My wife hasn’t smoked in years, but as far as our
relationship, of course it helps. I’m always in a great mood! She has no
problem with me smoking before we go to bed, it makes me nice and relaxed and
comfortable when we’re making love. It’s wonderful for us.
