A Canadian cannabis company is poised to have their cannabis product, under the name “Tweed,” in German pharmacies.

The company is known as Canopy Growth Corporation, and is based out of Ontario, Canada. Their subsidiary, Tweed Inc, will soon be exported overseas, according to a public press release. This marks the first time dried cannabis will be exported from Canada to Europe.

“Introducing Tweed product to German medical cannabis patients is an exciting and groundbreaking event,” stated Bruce Linton, Chairman and CEO of Canopy Growth, according to the press release. “Patients will soon have a new choice in variety for their medical cannabis, and we are honored to be involved in the changing landscape for German access and choice.”

Medical cannabis is legal in Germany, and patients can purchase needed product through pharmacies. However, there is currently no production on German soil, hence the need to outsource and bring in cannabis from Canada.

“Until government-controlled cultivation in Germany is established, which presupposes cannabis agency, the medical cannabis supply will be covered by import, stated German Health Minister Hermann Gröhe in an interview with RT News. Until now, he explained, cannabis has mainly been imported from the Netherlands.

Additionally, the company that will now be supplying Germany with medical cannabis has also been approved to list its shares with the Toronto Stock Exchange.

“Being the first cannabis producing company in North America listed on a major exchange such as the TSX strengthens the sector and helps signal that the world’s view of cannabis has finally shifted, starting right here in Canada,” Linton told Market Watch.

This caused Canopy’s shares to jump 14 percent, up 9.1 percent this year. Such continued growth and acceptance as a major cannabis exporter will only help to further the reputation of Canopy Growth, as well as that of cannabis in general.
