The Utah Foundation recently released results on August 11 that showed a divide between beliefs on legalizing medical cannabis. A total of 386 voters participated in the survey, where 43 percent agreed that “legalizing marijuana for medicinal purposes would have a positive impact on society,” and 34 percent disagreed. There was also a 23 percent neutral response.

The strongest in agreement with legalizing cannabis in terms of political parties were Democratic voters, with 52 percent agreeing with medical cannabis legalization, whereas only 31 percent of Republican responders agreed.

The various age groups also reflect a unique perspective on the subject between young and old voters. For those between ages 18-25, only 25 percent agreed with medical cannabis being a positive impact (with 58 percent disagreeing). However, the opinion was flipped with adults between 61 and 70 years old, with 55 percent agreeing (and 26 percent disagreeing).

In parts of the country, youth opinion on medical cannabis is seen at higher percentages, but not in Utah, “The age breakdown was a little bit surprising,” stated Utah Foundation Research Analyst Mallory Bateman. The survey interview 22 voters who were between 18-25 years of age, and 80 adults who were between 61-70 years old. The older surveyed adults showed a remarkable support for medical cannabis, given that they’ve had more life experience and are likely to have more health problems, “Of course they want the ability to try it out,” stated President of Libertas Institute, Connor Boyack. “They know that the propaganda they hear is pretty silly.”

The Utah Foundation’s study was conducted during the most recent 2016 legislative session, where two medical cannabis bills were being proposed. Unfortunately, both bills were approved by the Utah Senate but neither made it through the House for further consideration.
