Ohio Finds University to Test Medical Cannabis

Ohio has found a university willing to test the state’s medical cannabis so that legalization can move forward.

Medical cannabis has the green light in Ohio, but with a catch. In order for the program to go public, a testing lab run by an institution of higher learning must be operational and ready to test the cannabis products. CCV Research has announced that at least one university in the state is willing to perform the testing.

As of now, the college’s name has not been released, but CCV assured interested parties that the institution is up to par and will be ready for legal approval.

“We had a difficult time even finding qualified colleges which were willing to engage in the conversation” said John Cachat, president and CEO of CCV Research, in their official statement. “However, we found a unique, entrepreneurial team that recognized the opportunity to provide education with hands on lab experience, create local jobs and support a functioning medical cannabis system in Ohio.”

One major concern that Ohio has had up until now was that compliance would not be met and no Ohio universities would step up to the task. Since it has to be a school located within state borders, many feared that this was a covert way to keep the medical industry from starting up, or to penalize the school in question. Now that a site has been located, many advocates are breathing a sigh of relief.

“For all the flack state regulators have been getting during the rule-making process, Ohio did get this right,” Cachat added. “The Ohio legislators did a great job in getting colleges involved to assure an unbiased and controlled approach to testing medical cannabis. By placing the analytic testing in the hands of public institutes, Ohio has opened the door for significant life-saving medical breakthroughs, deeply needed workforce development opportunities and eliminated the risks of lab-shopping.”
