Whenever the topic of the future of cannabis legalization comes up, it doesn’t take long for someone to pose the idea that cannabis is going to be sold in all pharmacies someday, just like aspirin. Well, for Canadians, that day may be closer than people think, as one dispensary in British Columbia is already posing this very idea.

According to Metronews, the pharmaceutical company London Drugs claims that if cannabis becomes federally legal in Canada, they will sell it in all 79 of their stores. The company has location in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

“London Drugs is not doing anything with medical marijuana today, but we anticipate that most likely the legislation will change to enable medical marijuana to be more accessible,” John Tse, Vice-President of Pharmacy for London Drugs, stated in an interview with Metronews. “Should the legislation change, we’re going to prepare ourselves to be ready for that.”

“Pharmacists are medication experts and play a significant role in the dispensing and monitoring of medication to ensure safe and optimal use,” they added in an official statement. “We believe that dispensing medical marijuana through pharmacy, like other medications, is the safest option. Our members have the systems and processes in place to manage medications including monitoring, tracking usage, being aware of drug interactions.”

Of course, this is all just speculation and wishful thinking until the country actually legalizes cannabis on a federal level—but once that happens it looks like there are a bunch of companies poised to take over. Whether this will be a good thing for medical patients or a blow to the quality and consistency produced by smaller dispensaries, like the ones in the United States, is yet to be determined, but it’s clear that there won’t be any shortage of takers once cannabis is officially on the market.
