Aurora Cannabis to Begin Exports to Poland

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]A[/dropcap]lberta, Canada-based Aurora Cannabis announced that the Polish Ministry of Health granted approval for its first shipment of medical cannabis to Poland. It is believed that this is the first time a non-governmental run business has received approval to supply medical cannabis products in the country. Aurora Deutschland GmbH, Aurora’s German subsidiary, will ship the products to a pain treatment center and hospital in Warsaw.

“Becoming the first company to supply cannabis to Poland is a validation of Aurora’s ability to do business in international markets with high barriers to entry,” Neil Belot, Chief Global Business Development Officer for Aurora said.

Poland legalized medical cannabis last year, however the cannabis market has suffered from a lack of supply due to the current legislation banning all cannabis cultivation. Under the legislation, physicians can prescribe medical cannabis to patients, who can then access the cannabis through pharmacies. In some instances, the medical cannabis products can be covered under Poland’s statutory health insurance.

“We are thrilled to have successfully navigated the complexities of the Polish regulatory framework, and are proud to become the first company to supply a Polish hospital with medical cannabis. Throughout this process we’ve established strong relationships with medical professionals, state-owned wholesalers, and local foundations who have played an integral role in achieving this milestone,” said Maximilian Weinberg, Head of Business Development for Aurora Europe.

Aurora Cannabis Inc. has recently been listed on the New York Stock Exchange in addition to being traded in the Toronto Stock Exchange. Shares of the company surged 4.3 percent after the announcement was made. The increase is welcomed after Aurora saw its debut on the NYSE spoiled after shares fell by 15 percent. Aurora finished its first day on the NYSE down 12 percent.
