Advanced Nutrient’s Michael “BigMike” Straumietis hosted a successful fundraiser for Fiona Ma, who is running for California State Treasurer. Ma currently serves on the California Board of Equalization, and is running for the seat left vacant by current State Treasurer John Chiang, who is running for governor of California next year.

The Cannabis Freedom Fund held the fundraiser for Ma on June 15 at Straumietis’ mansion in the Hollywood Hills. Ma jumped at the opportunity to serve as California’s next head banker. “I immediately said that I want to be the next banker, the next treasurer of California, because I want to be able to actively work on this issue,” Ma said at the fundraiser. Ma calls American cannabis business owners’ lack of banking access “the elephant in the room.”

Ma is a CPA by profession and has served as an elected official at the local, state and administration levels of government. She’s outspoken about normalizing business relations with the cannabis industry. She continued, “I want to be out front on it and push the federal government. If the federal government does not want to help us or cooperate with us, then California needs to go it alone, or maybe we need to combine with the 23 states that have passed medicinal and the seven that have passed legal.”

Straumietis’ nonprofit, the Cannabis Freedom Fund, is dedicated to support political candidates that have demonstrated that they are in favor of legalizing and normalizing cannabis, and fighting those who oppose cannabis consumer rights. “The Cannabis Freedom Fund will support those candidates who have the courage of their convictions and are willing to fight hard against cannabis prohibition,” stated Straumietis. “When I read Fiona Ma’s position statements, I knew she was someone the CFF should support.”

The importance of banking in cannabis’ future cannot be understated. This is one of the important issues that Ma is taking along with her on her run for State Treasurer.
