Pennsylvania’s Medical Marijuana Program has announced who will be receiving the 12 available permits to grow and process cannabis in a secure location within the state. With over 450 applications, weeding out the competition required analyzing deciding factors including, the effect each company would have on the community as well as diversity plans and the business’ history.

Details surrounding exactly who was on the distributing panel are unclear as Program Director, John Collins felt that decision was necessary in order to avoid any member from being influenced in any way saying only that, “The evaluation team was made up of inter-agency experts.”

Collins called the new licenses, “a significant step forward in Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program,” and is confident that the patients in need of treatment will be able to do so in 2018.

Companies who did not receive permits are able to appeal the panel’s decision if they feel they were undeservingly passed over. While 13 more licenses are still set for future issue, there is no concrete date as of yet.

The Pennsylvania Medical Marijuana Program was signed into law on April 17, 2016. The program was designed to supply treatment for patients suffering from 17 serious medical conditions including, autism, cancer, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease and PTSD.
