Cannabis OrdinanceLong before legal cannabis was a hopeful spot on the horizon, people visiting and living in Weed, California were stealing signs and making jokes about the towns now all-too-appropriate name. On May 11, the Weed City Council held a first hearing for an ordinance that would allow the city to take full advantage of its tourist-enticing name.

According to Mt. Shasta News, the Weed City Council unanimously agreed to moving forward with Ordinance 4362017 to allow medical dispensaries within the city limits. Through the recommendations of an ad hoc committee, the council decided to approve all medical dispensaries, as long as they do not use cannabis leaves or the word “weed” along with the green cross on their signage. Dispensaries will not be allowed in close proximity to schools, and those looking to open a business must obtain a permit before doing so.

The council was slightly hesitant about whether or not they will allow recreational cannabis once it becomes legal, and so far nothing has been decided either way on that topic. Certain council members also expressed some concern about how cannabis will be brought into the town or transported, although the group did end up talking these worries out and voting unanimously in favor of medical cannabis. The group also discussed that any tax money from medical cannabis, and from recreational should they decide to legalize, should go to good causes like drug addiction education and school budgets. According to The Fresh Toast, the Weed City Council will revisit the ordinance and discuss adopting it on June 15.

Despite the city’s insistence on removing the word “weed” from any dispensary signage, it is going to be virtually impossible to keep visitors, patients and residents from making the obligatory puns, jokes and clever phrases. Even without those phrases being worked into slogans, Weed, California is sure to do well in the cannabis industry.
