Plants are just like people, and the old saying “you are what
you eat” rings true for both life forms. Veganics is a relatively new nutritional
plan for cannabis, but this nutrient application and soil-less production
method has become increasingly popular in the cannabis community within the
last decade. If you like a simple system that doesn’t require a lot of
components but produces award winning results, then veganic production might be
for you.

What is veganic cannabis production? In 1964, the Journal of Royal Society Arts published
an article first using the term “veganic manuring” by KD O’Brien. However, in
research and documentation beyond that, there is very little information
available on veganic agriculture production.

Growing cannabis “veganically” means that your production
system is limiting the use of animal byproducts as part of the growing medium,
nutrient-base and pest/fungal/viral management systems. With mediums like
coco-coir and recycled plastics becoming more readily available, producers can
now grow without the need of guanos, manures, bone and blood meals.

What are the benefits of veganic growing? Well, the smell of
your growing cannabis is going to be one of the first things you’ll notice
changing for the better. With veganics, your flavor will be sweeter tasting and
the resulting smoke will be smoother. The veganic teas and mediums express the
natural flavonoids and terpenes that the plant produces as opposed to a more robust
flavor that organic guanos, manures and synthetic methods produce. By
eliminating all guanos and manures that are used in the production method,
growers can reduce expenses and waste by increasing the onsite compost and by
utilizing locally sourced plant-based nutrient teas.

A well known veganic grower, Billy Braveheart Green from
Oregon won the 2014 U.S. Cannabis Cup for Best Hybrid this year, with his Rare
Dankness Seeds Starkiller OG. All his plants were grown veganically, and
utilized store-bought Vegamatrix nutrients.
An easy alternative to buying pre-packaged liquid fertilizers, however, is
compost. You can compost and brew all these nutrients at home with a little bit
of research, your own food waste and forward thinking.

As a cannabis producer, you are a steward of the land and it
is important to understand that you can actually grow and improve the quality
of the soil by getting a better understanding of what’s actually happening down
below. Having to go out and buy a medium whether its soil, peat moss, coco-coir
or expanded clay is not economically sustainable, it becomes time consuming and
in the case of peat moss, it can even be environmentally detrimental. It is
difficult to train ourselves to think differently about our traditions in life
and in agriculture, but with more beneficial alternatives available, why not be
kinder to our planet and go veganic. Think before you grow, and you can save
yourself a lot of time and money.
