Last night, the Vallejo City Council discussed two important medical cannabis topics regarding collectives in the community. The first topic included details of a new ordinance that will allow the council to hire a deputy city attorney and legal secretary to enforce shutting down collectives within the city, which was passed with a 6-1 vote.

According to the Times Herald, there are currently 34 collectives operating in Vallejo, and the two open positions will cost the city approximately $260,000. As for the second topic, thanks to a 7-0 vote to postpone the motion to a later date, each member of the Vallejo City Council will use the next month to alter the language on the current medical cannabis ordinance and send the requested changes to the city attorney before for the next meeting.

Changes will include the allowance of up to four collectives within city limits instead of only two, which the council agreed isn’t enough to serve local patients who need access to medicine nearby, especially those who have to walk to their local collectives. The change will also increase the distance that collectives must be located away from schools, playgrounds, and anywhere else that kids frequently visit, from 600 feet to 1,000 feet. The city council will revisit the second, postponed topic on Tuesday, May 12.
