is actually made up of one individual, 23-year-old Aaron Trigg, a DJ and producer
recently signed to DJ Shadow’s new digital music label, Liquid Amber. Bleep
Bloop’s new EP 10 Watt Lazers is
turning heads as we speak. Intelligent, young, ambitious and from “outer space,”
this kid has teamed up with some of the best producers and DJs in the business,
and is getting solid recognition from media and fans all over the world.
CULTURE recently sat down for a talk
with Trigg to talk about music, cannabis and his artistic process.

What kinds of music and artists influenced you
growing up?

I had an
older brother that was into rap music, so that’s how I got into the idea of
beats. You know, something with bass, where the bass hits hard on the
subwoofer. He got me into listening to De La Soul, Wu Tang Clan, Biggie Smalls,
NWA and others. My parents turned me onto different things. My dad is really
into the blues and folk music, he got me into old shit like Mississippi John
Hurt. Both my parents turned me onto Tom Waits so that was huge for me, all
dark and weird. My mother also loves reggae music so I guess you can say I was
turned onto a bit of everything.

How did you get involved with DJ Shadow and the
signing to Liquid Amber as its first artist?

As far as
getting signed to DJ Shadow’s label, it’s really kind of surreal. He’s so
legendary and to be signed as the first artist to his label is a weird feeling.
I know it’s happening, but it doesn’t feel as though it actually is. The way I
got connected to DJ Shadow was incredibly serendipitous.

How do you describe the music on 10 Watt Lazers?

Well, what I
really had in mind was GRIME music out of the UK. Grime is sort dirty beats
with off kilter rhythms and it’s something I listen to all the time. I just
thought I’d make some instrumental Grime tunes but with my flavor of a spaced
out, left field kind of vibe. Dance floor tunes that people can trip out to.

How do you feel about the legalization of medical cannabis
in the U.S.?

I think it
that cannabis should be 100 percent legal in the United States. I think it’s
silly that it’s not. One day it will be legal and everyone will look back at
this time as a time of prohibition.

Do you use medical cannabis in your artistic output?

I definitely
use cannabis when I produce music, I like to do dabs when I produce. I’ll do a
dab and it kind of washes over me and I’ll be in the zone for half an hour or
so. I’m making music but that part of my mind goes into that zone where I’ll
just do my thing. I like to wake up in the morning, stay high all day and make
music. My favorite strains tend to be Sour Diesel and a strain I can’t really
find up here anymore called Cat Piss. I love Jelly Bean hash if I can find it.
I don’t really do flowers but concentrates, I love.
