As the social acceptance of cannabis is on the rise, new uses for the plant seem to pop up everyday. Whether you use cannabis medicinally, to alleviate stress or just to transform your mundane activity into a humorous one, many people turn to cannabis for its desired effects—like sex. Recently sex therapists explained why cannabis increases sex drive.

According to those therapists, relaxing by the pool, watching a movie or contemplating the vastness of space are all common reasons people consume cannabis, but it can also enhance sex and increase pleasure too. “Every person has a unique makeup both psychologically and physically, and for cannabis to help improve sexuality, you must find the type that works for you,” explained sexologist Nick Karras, author of “The Passionate High: A Guide to Using Cannabis For Better Sex and Creativity.”

Recent studies have found that THC (one of the main cannabinoids found in cannabis) targets areas in the brain that control pleasure, pain and relaxation. THC can help break down social barriers, as well as help to decrease tensions and pre-sex anxiety.

“People who use marijuana may have more sex because they put less pressure on themselves when they are high, so they don’t have the same performance anxiety as those who are sober,” suggested Sex Therapist Amanda Pasciucco. “A small amount of marijuana may also help increase your ability to communicate your preferences to your partner.”

Psychiatrist, Dr. Lester Grinspoon, told High Times that cannabis “greatly enhances the sexual experience for many people. There’s no doubt that when people are high, they’re more sensitive to their sexual feelings and urges.”

Next time you’re feeling a bit frisky, consider lighting up a joint and sharing it with your partner before things start heating up. You might find that a little cannabis can do wonders for your libido.
