The Potential of Hemp Innovation

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]H[/dropcap]emp has been used for centuries not only as an agricultural product, but also as a tool and building material. Centuries ago, hemp was transformed into rope, ship’s sails, nets for fisherman, bow strings for archers, and so much more. But that was then—and this is now. In 2018, hemp is being used for far more than just rope. It is being studied on a microscopic level and has been manipulated to create new building materials that are as strong as they are impressive. It may be Hemp History Week, but we’re looking at history being made every day with these new efforts.

Concrete Insulation

Concrete is everywhere—it surrounds our cities and suburban areas, and now even our homes are built with it. Some geniuses like those who work at American Hemp LLC found a way to add hemp to traditional concrete, creating a stronger and longer-lasting insulation material. The process uses hemp hurds, and it’s fire resistant too.

Automotive Body

Not many, but a few hemp-based car exteriors have made headlines over the past few years. One of the most noteworthy is Jay Leno’s “2017 Renew” which features three layers of woven hemp that is said to be more dent-resistant than steel. That particular model’s hemp panels also weigh about 100 pounds, and the car runs on bio-fuel (recycled waste). Although Henry Ford is technically the first person to use hemp in the construction of a car back in 1941 (which also ran on hemp fuel), we’ve definitely come a long way since then.

Aircraft Body

The future could be bright if the world is trying to make hemp work for flight too. Last year, one hemp-based aircraft was created specifically to run on hemp fuel. It is 36 feet in length and is large enough to fit five people (two passengers and one pilot).

Hemp Oil Wood Finish

Unlike other hemp oil on the market, which is consumable and more often used in food, this particular hemp oil can be used a wood finish. This is the perfect way to incorporate hemp into hobbies like woodworking, where enthusiasts will tap into their inner Ron Swanson to create something truly beautiful. This particular version of wood finish contains no chemicals and is biodegradable, and can bring out some beautiful natural colors in both freshly cut wood, as well as wood that just needs some sprucing up.
