When you start getting up there in age, pain and illness sometimes come along for the ride. Joint, neck and back pain are common, the threat of diabetes may loom and dementia is one of those diseases that older folks need to monitor. And while there are various medical options out there . . . one of them is medical cannabis. And it seems that more older Americans are utilizing the blessed plant then in previous years, according to The New York Times and statistics from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Some of the use is medical—the Times spoke to a Crohn’s disease sufferer—but some of it is for social (read: recreational) purposes. In 2002, about 2.7 percent of adults ages 50 to 59 reported using cannabis, according to the National Survey. In 2011, that number rose to 6.3 percent. Some older cannabis even speak about organizing “Grannies for Grass” groups in several states. Visiting grandma this summer suddenly got very interesting.
