46 men and women serving time in federal prisons for nonviolent drug convictions will officially be granted clemency and relieved of their sentences, according to a video published on the White House’s official Facebook page earlier today. In the video, President Obama speaks about his decision to grant clemency to the 46 prisoners, stating that, “at its heart, America is a nation of second chances and I believe these folks deserve their second chances.” 

 

According to USA Todaythe aforementioned prisoners will be released by Nov. 10, 2015. 

President Obama also announced he will be in Philadelphia on Tuesday where he will lay out his ideas for criminal justice reform, many of which, he reports, are already receiving bipartisan support. The implications of this announcement are huge for cannabis convictions in the United States, as the flaws of the justice system in regards to nonviolent drug convictions have now officially been acknowledged in a highly publicized and historical way.
