Locals in Grayson County, Kentucky are questioning the integrity of its law enforcement after the force posted a comment ridiculing perpetrators. A handful of Kentucky’s finest responded to a cannabis growing operation bust with the hashtag #WeGotYoWeed. Local law enforcement in Leitchfield, Kentucky found $600,000 worth of cannabis growing in a cornfield. Deputies seized the opportunity to mock the alleged growers, and the cannabis community is not happy about the way they are handling public relations surrounding the case.

The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office posted the message with the hashtag on July 29, 2016. Deputies found 254 plants hidden in a corn field off Highway 54 earlier that day. The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office plans on many more arrests.

“You know this is just a drop in the bucket. We know there’s a lot more plants out there, and people have mixed feelings about marijuana grows and whether marijuana should be legal or not. But it’s currently illegal in the state of Kentucky, and we’ll continue to enforce those drug laws,” Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins said in a statement.

An anonymous tip led authorities to the scene where the grow operation was found. As of August 8, 2016, no arrests have been made. Authorities are waiting for the alleged grower(s) to claim their confiscated cannabis.

Cultivation in Kentucky for over five plants is considered a Class D felony. Subsequent cultivation charges result in a Class C felony and is punishable to 5-10 years imprisonment. Kentucky is home to an active hemp industry which only includes authorized grow operations that grow cannabis with less than one percent THC.

Frankly, law enforcement in America has a major PR problem, and this incident is another stumbling block. Less than a month ago, officers from the Santa Ana Police Department were discharged for questionable actions during a Santa Ana cannabis collective raid. The case in Grayson County is still under investigation.
