By the looks of it, Lumberton, Mississippi Police Chief Shane Flynt sure knows how to handle hitting a pipe full of cannabis. Flynt was caught on camera smoking what was clearly cannabis. According to Lumberton Mayor Quincy Rogers, Flynt has been suspended with pay.

“I’m the only chief of police in Lumberton that likes to smoke weed,” Flynt said in the video as he smoked the pipe. He was unaware that he was being recorded.

Flynt was sent home from work Feb. 27 as the video surfaced and went viral online. Flynt will remain on suspension until the city’s board of aldermen meet again on March 6.

“Please know that one video, one mistake, does not define the person I am, my moral or ethical values. I made a huge mistake, first of all, I trusted the wrong person, welcomed them in my personal home, they recorded me in a vulnerable state and they planned every minute of it. This person being my wife who is obviously very vindictive. I love serving the town of Lumberton, the people there are like family to me. It saddens my heart that I’ve disappointed many as well as myself,” Flynt posted on his Facebook page. “Just a thought.. Where would we all be if we all had hidden cameras in our home? What would our neighbors, preachers, co workers, friends, etc. think of our conversations? There is no excuse. I pray you all find it in your hearts to show me grace and know that I am truly sorry for this incident.”

Meanwhile, non-police residents in Mississippi who are caught in possession of personal amounts of cannabis face a maximum $250 fine. While the state has decriminalized cannabis to some degree, you’ll still receive a large fine and have your cannabis confiscated.

What the police do with your cannabis at that point is anyone’s best guess. Flynn was suspended recently last February on a different matter, but was reinstated. According to local reports, Flynn is otherwise respected in the community.
