Everyone loves nebulas—the breathtaking images of clouds of dust formed by stars and planets are what make up all of the “galaxy” imagery in pop culture, and pictures of these natural beauties are truly breathtaking.

Recently, new images of the Orion Nebula surfaced that show many roughly earth-sized planetary objects in view. According to The Guardian, scientists feel hopeful that the images show us possible planets, about the size of our own.

These more than likely would not be habitable planets, because they did not form while orbiting around stars and are floating freely. However, this is interesting because the planets more than likely formed in isolation as the nebula collapsed into the stars. The image also shows many “failed stars,” or brown dwarf planets, in the range of the nebula.

All of this deep-space introspection makes the cannabis enthusiast think of the aptly-titled Orion OG strain, named for this famous nebula. This strain is notable for its helpfulness with treating pain, allowing for sleep and increasing appetite. These are all fitting traits for the classic OG, as it tends to make the smoker feel as though he or she is floating through space, looking at nebula, stars and far-away planets.

Every day, new and exciting discoveries from space are being broadcast back to earth, thanks to the advanced photo and satellite technology we have to learn about our surroundings. Similarly, here on this planet, many new discoveries are happening with the cannabis plant, a substance we are only just beginning to study and understand as taboos fall away.

It is no surprise that this type of discovery is happening hand-in-hand; Carl Sagan himself predicted it in his seminal book, Contact, and humanity’s embrace of both the vast depths surrounding us and what cannabis can teach us about human health and our own mind are great proof of humanity’s capacity for discovery.
