Age: 20

Condition/Illness: Osteosarcoma of the left sinus. Three separate
malignancies prior. (Retinoblastoma,
Rhabdomyosarcoma, high-grade

sarcoma).
Using
cannabis since:
As early as 2004.

Why did you start
using medical cannabis?

In 2004, I had no
appetite from chemo/radiation and marijuana helped to stimulate that, which prevented me
from needing a feeding tube placed. In the
years after that, it helped me through bouts of insomnia, stress and the pain
that comes from these types of cancers.

Did you try other
methods or treatments before cannabis?

Of course I have
other things for pain, but I wouldn’t say that I tried other methods for insomnia and
stress before cannabis, at least not
in terms of medication. I have been well aware of the downside that comes with any kind of
prescriptions and marijuana seems like it has
the least negative impact to my health, while simultaneously helping me manage my stress and pain
levels and also regulating my sleep schedule.

What’s the most
important issue or problem facing medical cannabis patients?

A negative stigma
continues to be placed on this drug, I believe this is because it is too commonly taken in
excess. At that point, one is labeled
a “stoner,” and people tend to associate all cannabis consumers with traits shared by someone whom has
abused it. That aside, I believe
those with proper medical insurance coverage and valid symptoms should not be paying the
amount charged by the dispensaries in
my area. That has been a deterrent for me since I first received my license.

What do you say to
folks who are skeptical about cannabis as a medicine?

What I tell people who are skeptical regarding
cannabis: It is the least harmful
treatment for many ailments, when compared to the alternative. Commonly accepted medical
treatments can do greater harm to
the body, even when used as prescribed.
