In light of this new wave of interest-specific dating sites (there are now dating sites specifically for farmers, Christians, and even Republicans) there is a new dating site specifically geared towards those who use cannabis. My420Mate.com promises to “take the uncertainty and awkwardness out of asking your date if they smoke pot.”

The site was beta-tested in 2013, and released on 4/20 of this year in the Los Angeles area, although an account can be made by users everywhere. The idea behind this brainchild is that broaching this topic can be awkward in the dating world, since cannabis still has a somewhat negative connotation in the books of some, even those who appear more liberal. When a serious cannabis enthusiast realizes their date will forever look down on them or not tolerate their use of the plant, it can be crushing– especially if the person in question sees their use as medication.

According to the tagline of the site, this is a common problem. ”What if you tell your potential partner that you smoke pot and they run for the hills?” the homepage asks. “You just wasted your time on a relationship that was doomed from the start. With My420Mate.com you are in the clear.”

“Some people might think it’s just a dating site for hippies or stoners,” creator Jay Lindberg told Riverfront Times. “This website is for people from all walks of life; from the medical-marijuana patients to casual smokers to business professionals who may be in the cannabis lifestyle but they keep it out of their professional life.” Lindberg, from Missouri, created the site with business partner Miguel Lozano from L.A.

This self-proclaimed “cupid of cannabis” seems like a great way to get enthusiasts together and get the awkwardness out of the way. Today, with recreational and medicinal cannabis making the plant a lot more available, the idea that you can tell a smoker by how they dress or act is more outdated than ever, so this will certainly come in handy. As the website says, “Plant your seed and watch your love grow.” We are sure to see some sparks in the near future.
