I
t’s
been rumored for a while now that cannabis can be a major help in battling and
overcoming cancer, but like so many other things, restrictions on testing due
to the schedule of the substance has kept us from knowing for sure. Finally,
however, the
National
Institute on Drug Abuse has voiced
that cannabis does have medical
benefits, and can in fact
help kill and shrink cancer cells.

The official wording of the report is as follows: “Recent
animal studies have shown that marijuana extracts may help kill certain cancer
cells and reduce the size of others. Evidence from one animal study suggests
that extracts from whole-plant marijuana can slow the growth of cancer cells
from one of the most serious types of brain tumors. Research in mice
showed that these extracts, when used with radiation, increased the cancer-killing
effects of the radiation.”

“It couldn’t be any clearer that [cannabis] has
medical value,” Tom Angell, who serves as the chairman of the Marijuana
Majority, told The
Daily Caller
. “When even NIDA and the surgeon general are acknowledging
that [cannabis] can help people who are suffering, it is time for the Obama
administration to reschedule the drug. The attorney general can initiate
that process today, and there’s no reason for him not to, especially when
polling shows that such a huge majority of Americans supports medical [cannabis].”

All of this can be
researched and proven even further if the U.S. approves the bill to move
cannabis from a Schedule I to a Schedule II substance. Hopefully, as more
people realize that the true benefits of medical cannabis are not trumped-up
legalization talk, but real and clear science, the industry will be able to
move forward.
