n October 22 in Imperial
Beach, in a small and eclectic sea side community south of San Diego, a legal
medical cannabis grow operation was broken into and ransacked by masked
criminals. The perpetrators got away with an undisclosed amount of medicine
that was meant for verified and legitimate patients. Sheriffs quickly showed up
and got to work, but not in the manner in which they should have. Instead of
going after the robbers, they chose to instead harass and infringe upon the
rights of Marcus Boyd, Vice Chair of the San Diego chapter of Americans for
Safe Access, and those who depend on the medicine that his modest garden
produced.

Believe it or not, that was
not the most outrageous act committed by law enforcement on that warmer-than-usual
Wednesday morning. As the San Diego Narcotics Task Force ravaged the cannabis plants
that resided in Marcus Boyd’s non-descript warehouse, located behind the office
in which he conducts his family business of insurance sales, email blasts were
being fired off by his allies at the San Diego Americans for Safe Access, that
beckoned protesters to the aid of Boyd, in front of news cameras. Had it not
been for the crowd of outspoken and undaunted protesters, the media made have
not captured video of a San Diego Narcotics Task Force officer wearing a
t-shirt that read, “Marijuana Eradication, San Diego, CA. Fuck The Growers,
Marijuana Is Illegal” Yes, it actually said that. At least Sheriff Bill Gore
spoke out against the unprofessional display, saying, “This shirt
is not approved or condoned by the Sheriff’s Department. Its message is vulgar
and not representative of who we are and the values we uphold. Appropriate
administrative action will be taken.”

As to what “appropriate
administrative action” actually means, we do not yet know. We do know that the
department must be nervous, considering the national attention that one idiotic
Sergeant has brought upon America’s Finest City. As local news reporter Allison
Ash said, “We have to take his (Sheriff Bill Gore) word for it since personnel
actions aren’t public. I’ll bet he doesn’t wear it to work again.” Not
surprisingly, the community has rallied around Marcus, setting up a Go Fund Me
page to raise funds that will be used in his defense, if needed. If any funds are left over or
charges are not filed against Marcus, donations will be re-directed to a San
Diego Americans for Safe Access Education Campaign.
