Looking for 420 love? Sarah Diesel’s diary’s got great advice

Dear Diesel Diary,

12 days until Valentines Day. My great aunt’s annual reminder that I have yet to be married off to an eligible young bachelor. Dating is not as easy when you are a patient, let alone L.A.’s Countess of Cannabis. Here in Hollywood, one can smell that sweet scent pretty much anywhere people go, but I wouldn’t date just anyone who consumes cannabis.

Dating can seem scary and stressful when really it should be a pleasant and enchanting experience. Going to places that appeal to healthy and professional patients is a good start. Next time you’re strolling along at a farmers market and you see the cute cucumber guy you just can’t keep your eyes off of, just walk up and compliment him on his cucumis sativus and I’m sure he’ll take it from there.

If the impromptu Sunday morning date turns into a few Saturday evening dates—and there are still butterflies in your tummy—you could be falling for him. However, there’s no need to fall for every cute guy that shows interest in you. After some substantial dating and getting-to-know-each-other time, I ask myself two very important questions: “Could I grow old with this person?” and “Does this person love cannabis as much as I do?” I also think it is the little things that count when finding the perfect partner.

Dating a non-patient can be just as challenging, if not more. Not everyone accepts this plant like we do (families, bosses, co-workers, oh my!). You spend every holiday dinner or office party talking (fibbing) about your career as a “supply chain manager” for an “Agricultural Consulting Firm.” Sounds like you better brush up on the fluctuation of the commodities market!

Keep in mind, the same pitfalls that happen in every community and business happen in the cannabis world too, from gossip to job security. It might sound like a romantic idea that you and your fiancé work at the same collective, but if local politics shift, you will both be looking for new careers. I must admit though, it is really awesome to come home to a freshly rolled joint as well as a beautiful smile. Not to mention it’s no fun snuggling up to a cannabis comedy if you can’t smoke a joint together.

If you’re still trying to break the ice, a shy friend of mine had better success with 420 friendly dating sites such as singles420.com and my420friends.com. It helps to avoid that awkward but inevitable

conversation, “So . . . um . . . do . . . you . . . um . . . smoke?” On the other hand, if you want to bypass the Photoshop-ed profile picture, cannabis expos and events have been known to draw an eclectic plethora of cannabis lovers. Now if you want to spice things up with a little grass roots advocacy, medical cannabis meetings such as those of your local ASA or NORML chapters can also be happy hunting grounds for romance.

Always remember that just because you haven’t found the right icing for your cake, you don’t need someone to love you to love yourself. But then again, who needs icing when you can have a can of whipped cream (vegan, of course)?

After all, love is pretty simple. Audrey Hepburn said it perfectly. “The most important thing is to enjoy your life—to be happy—it’s all that matters.”

POSITIVE ENCOURAGEMENTS FOR DATING

Be yourself. You want your significant other to love you.

Don’t worry about impressing the other person. They are impressed with you already. That is why they are on a date with you!

Trust and communication are just as important on the first date as they are on your 65th anniversary.

Value and cherish every moment together.

Laugh, all the time, together.
