Marijuana BusinessWith the major rise of the cannabis industry and the fact that business is booming in legal states, it is no surprise that a college is starting to offer specific marijuana business courses.

According to USA Today, Kwantlen Polytechnic University in British Columbia, Canada is offering a “marijuana management” class this fall. The course is designed to be an “Introduction to Professional Management of Marijuana for Medical Purposes in Canada.” The course is 14 weeks long, and it will be taught module-style, including segments like faculty management, legalities and regulations, marketing, sales and patient acquisition.

“There are some Colorado-like changes taking place to legislation in Canada,” Jim Pelton, executive director of continuing and professional studies at KPU, told USA Today. “We did a bit of market research and the research indicated that the industry does believe there is a need for this kind of training. We are the College of Professional Studies here, so it’s really our job to respond to industry training needs.”

“I went around to a few universities and Kwantlen seemed to be the best fit to start an intro course. I got in touch with [Pelton] and made a proposal to him and he accepted it,” explained Tegan Adams, the business development manager teaching the course. Adams explained that he worked with twenty different industry professionals to develop the course, and also sought guidance from the Canadian National Medical Marijuana Association.

While this online class is a pioneer in academia, and still only being taught in Canada, it appears to be the next logical step in the world of cannabis legalization and regulation. As the business side of the industry continues to grow, it follows that courses will be developed so that people can take better advantage of opportunities.
