With all the buzz around legalization in certain states, the news has for the most part—thankfully— been positive. People are starting to understand that cannabis can be a safe medical alternative, doing away with the nasty stigma that has followed the plant since the 1940s. However, there is one area that still remains in the shadow of negativity: edibles. Since the unfortunate incidents that have occurred over the past year with the products, the industry is starting to recoil, and there’s even been talk of making edibles illegal in some legal areas.

In response to this, new lines of safer, lower THC products are hitting the shelves. One of the first was the “Rookie Cookie” from Colorado, a cookie that contains only 10 milligrams of THC, as opposed to the 65 that is normal for edibles. By consuming only this amount, users will still be under the legal limit to drive.

Tim Cullen, owner of multiple dispensaries in Denver was quoted in High Times saying, “We still get people walking in here saying, ‘What’s the strongest thing?’ But more and more they’re asking about flavor, the experience, the whole nine yards.”

NORML representatives commented on their approval of this, comparing these months to the end of alcohol prohibition, where only 3% alcohol was legal at first, and harder versions of the substance were slowly introduced back to the palate. These new and safer treats should make it much easier for patients to medicate and consumers to relax without risk of over indulgence.
