The first day of recreational cannabis sales in Nevada was a historical and eventful day, with long lines of adults waiting for their first taste of legal cannabis. State Senator Tick Segerbloom was among the people in line waiting to legally purchase cannabis on July 1.

One minute after midnight, consumers were already flooding into dispensaries across Las Vegas and other cities in Nevada. Tourists, locals and lawmakers were in attendance.

Segerbloom spent the premier day of legal cannabis sales at The+Source dispensary in Las Vegas. The senator was there to make the dispensary’s first purchase. He bought a pre-roll of Segerbloom Haze, a local strain named after him. “Every time you buy something here, 33-cents is going to taxes. This is the most heavily taxed and regulated industry in the whole state,” Segerblom told KSNV. Segerbloom is considered “the godfather” of the successful cannabis industry in Nevada.

Other notable celebratory events include a couple that got married inside a Las Vegas cannabis greenhouse. Anna and Mark Balfe-Taylor exchanged vows in a cannabis cultivation facility which produces cannabis for one of Las Vegas’ biggest dispensaries, The Grove. The bride was seen carrying a bouquet that included cannabis flowers and fan leaves. The groom was seen wearing a large cannabis bud in his coat pocket.

Many consumers in Las Vegas were surprised to get a receipt for their purchases. Some, however, were put off or alarmed by the high tax rate that wasn’t expected. The tourism industry, however, is doing great and more companies are marketing their services for cannabis consumers. Cannabis consumption in Nevada is limited to private, indoor residences, and continues to be prohibited in casinos, bars, parks and in public. Those who are caught consuming cannabis in public will continue to be issued a $600 fine.
