There have been significant shifts throughout the world in cannabis culture, as the general public learns more about the plan and as many lawmakers embrace changing legislation. And just in time for the 4/20 week celebration comes a book that looks to further open up that ongoing conversation: High Grade.

Although cannabis is not yet legal in the UK, the London-based lifestyle brand Mr Nice launched its new High Grade collection, which features a limited-edition smoking set, a collectible, handmade ashtray and a book celebrating the art of modern-day cannabis culture, according to the Creative Review.

“Mr Nice” is one of many names of Howard Marks, a pervasive figure who often worked to challenge cannabis perceptions and push forward the modern cannabis experience.

The Mr Nice website explains that Marks “… was one of history’s most renowned cannabis smugglers turned counter-culture hero, proving that being ‘nice’ doesn’t always mean following the rules. A lovable rogue that made friends wherever he went, Howard traveled the world as an international man of mystery throughout the 1970s and ’80s—foiling the law at every turn. But, on his journey from criminal to non-violent activist, he always championed the values of compassion, freedom and community.”

Marks was acquitted of smuggling the largest cannabis import into the UK and years later was sentenced to 25 years in prison. During that time, he kept busy inside, acting as a jailhouse lawyer for fellow inmates, teaching English and philosophy, continuing to international debates on cannabis laws and practicing yoga. Following his release from prison in 1995, Marks dedicated much of his remaining life to activism in cannabis legalization and challenging the damage done by the War on Drugs.

The High Grade book includes works from 20 artists, and as a festive, 4/20 twist, each page of the book has a perforated edge so artworks can be pulled out into 60 individual roaches.

Mr Nice auctioned off copies of the limited edition book prior to the launch, and all profits will go toward the drug law charity Release.
