Netflix, still on a roll with its seemingly countless original series, will be launching a new comedy sitcom entitled Disjointed, which stars Kathy Bates, on August 25. Given the name, the comedy is packed with cannabis anecdotes and jokes. The show was co-created by Chuck Lorre, who has also worked on successful sitcoms like The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men.

In Disjointed, Bates stars as Ruth, a cannabis activist and dispensary manager of a medical cannabis dispensary called Ruth’s Alternative Caring. Ruth’s adult son, who also works at the dispensary, is played by Aaron Clifton Moten. However, it’s not easy running a dispensary in the city of Los Angeles. To make things interesting, the security guard, played by Tone Bell, is recovering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after returning from his tour in Afghanistan. Ruth also has to work with three local cultivators who are played by Dougie Baldwin, Elizabeth Ho and Elizabeth Alderfer.

Disjointed is a workplace comedy starring Kathy Bates as a lifelong advocate for legalization who’s finally living her dream as the owner of an L.A.–area cannabis dispensary,” Netflix describes on the show’s summary. “Joining her are three budtenders, her 20-something son and a deeply troubled security guard. All of them are more or less constantly high.” The Emmy-award winning actress is pushing the envelope by bringing daily dispensary life into primetime television. According to TheWrap, Lily Mae Harrington will be playing a young Kathy Bates, but her role in the show is unclear.

The initially 20-episode sitcom will be co-produced and co-written by David Javerbaum, who used to write for Jon Stewart’s The Daily Show. Javerbaum is also well-known for his creation the massively popular Twitter account, @TheTweedofGod.

There are plenty of cannabis documentaries, but few sitcoms that focus exclusively on cannabis workers and activists. Although summer is just around the corner, there’s still four months before this cannabis-friendly sitcom makes its way to everyone’s “Watch” list.
