Justin Bieber Advocates for Medical Cannabis

Justin BieberLove him or hate him, Justin Bieber recently tweeted in support of medical cannabis. Attn shared a video, “Big Pharma is literally paying to block medical marijuana,” which explains how pharmaceutical companies have been funding anti-cannabis legislation in Arizona and across the country.

The video points out how Insys Therapeutics recently donated $500,000 to Arizonans for Responsible Drug Policy, which is the group leading the fight against the initiative to legalize recreational cannabis in the state. Insys Therapeutics is the creator of a synthetic form of THC, Syndros, which is approved by the FDA. Insys is also the producer of the controversial opioid spray, Subsys, which is often prescribed to cancer patients.

Anti-cannabis funding coming from pharmaceutical companies is not a new trend. The Attn video explained, “In fact, drug companies spent more than $880 million on fighting weed over the past decade.” The reason for this could be that states with legal medical cannabis have a lower number of prescriptions of painkillers.

Medical cannabis has also proven to lower the number of fatal car crashes caused by someone under the influence of opioids.

Beiber took to Twitter to retweet the video on October 2. “This is important,” Justin Bieber wrote. “A friend showed me this. I’m going to be talking more about this. We all need to pay attention.” The singer has over 88.7 million followers on Twitter, so it is great to see Justin Bieber using his giant platform to help the medical cannabis movement.

In 2015, Beiber told said in an interview that smoking cannabis is not part of his identity. “You’ll never see me smoking. Because that is not who I am,” Beiber said. “If it’s something I do then it’s something I do, but it’s not who I am and what I want to put on blast for the world to see.” Although it is not part of his personal persona, being an advocate for what is right in regards to cannabis legalization is now part of his identity.
