Jamaica is incredibly excited about their newly legalized freedom – so excited, that they plan to open up dispensaries available to tourists as soon as they touch down on Jamaican soil.

According to The Independent, the country plans to install cannabis-dispensing kiosks in airports and sea ports. Cannabis has only been legal for two months, but already, the Cannabis Licensing Authority (CLA) is drawing up plans for the kiosks. Cannabis is legal for medical and sacramental use in Jamaica, and any household is allowed to cultivate up to five plants.

“We’ve had our first meeting, and my thinking is that we’d need a few weeks to turn out an appropriate policy document,” Winston De La Haye, Medical Committee Chairman for the CLA, was reported as stating.

The kiosks would grant tourists with medical cannabis prescriptions a permit for cannabis use in the country. They’d be able to carry up to two ounces while in Jamaica. While the kiosks would certainly be a tourism draw and a way to capitalize on cannabis the way places like Colorado and Canada have, they would also be a good way to regulate cannabis and make sure that people have easy access to legal permits and understand exactly how to get them.

“It would primarily be for people who have a prescription and, in effect, you’re doing it for medicinal purposes with a permit from the Ministry of Health,” explained Hyacinth Lightbourne, Chairman of the CLA. “If they don’t have a prescription, then they can do what we call ‘self-declare,’ and this will allow them to have the two ounces while they are here.”

Since Jamaica certainly has the cultural monopoly on cannabis use, it comes as no surprise that they are so eager to spread the love. This coming year is bound to see a major rise in Jamaican tourism.
