This January, the Iowa Board of Pharmacy decided to recommend that Cannabidiol (CBD) be reclassified in the state. Seemingly uncomfortable with a more “drastic” recommendation, the board voted to recommend that CBD become classified as a Schedule II drug as opposed to its current Schedule I standing. 

The fight over classification of medical cannabinoids has been raging since the 1970 passage of the Controlled Substances Act. The act deems all cannabinoids contained in cannabis sativa and hemp to have no medicinal value.

By 1990, over 34 states had enacted research programs that were subsequently shut down to study the efficacy of medical cannabis, even research looking into the benefits it holds for AIDS patients. There have been many attempts to change the classification of medical cannabis since, however, many have come close, but unfortunately failed at the finish line. The recreational market start-up of cannabis in two states last year finally appears to have changed the tone dramatically on the topic.

With pressure from Iowa, a state often known for being pivotal in presidential elections, we’re sure this tone will carry out for further 2015 reform and into the 2016 elections,
