Recreational CannabisFire up a festive strain like Ghost OG and in no time, you’ll be seeing ghosts like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. Alabama-based Andalusia High School recently launched something truly terrifying, the Marijuana Haunted House which showcases how “scary” the dangers of cannabis are. But here are some actual reportedly haunted places in states with recreational cannabis—and we’re not talking about cheap spook alleys.

The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California was strangely modified by Sarah Winchester beginning in 1886. Winchester was reportedly told by a medium to leave her home in New Haven, Connecticut, and build a home out West, a home big enough for all the people that have died from her late husband’s William Wirt Winchester’s guns. The house is nothing short of a labyrinth, complete with four of seven stories remaining, questionable hallways and secret rooms.

The Del Monte Speakeasy, built 1919, is a secret basement bar in Venice, California that flourished during the thick of Prohibition. Although the bar is very old, it wasn’t reportedly haunted until 2003, when owner Frank Bennett passed away. Staff reportedly has seen Bennett’s ghost haunting a particular booth.

The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, first opened in 1909, but the hotel didn’t become popular until it was immortalized in the adaptation of Stephen King’s bestselling novel, The Shining. Through the decades, numerous guests have reported hearing children’s laughter in the estate which was abandoned by the 1970s. Nowadays, the hotel offers the Murder Mystery Dinner, the Shining Ball and the Halloween Masquerade costume party, banking off the film adaptation.

The Northern State Mental Hospital in Sedro-Woolley, Washington, built 1912, is where horrifying lobotomies, electroshock therapy and strenuous labor were forced upon the senile. Paranormal activity has been reported there including shadow figures that seem to be mental patients trapped in limbo in the hospital. Cold spots are also often reported.

The ghost that reportedly haunts McMenamins’ Hotel Oregon in McMinnville, Oregon, built 1905, has a name. The ghost named “John” frequently stalks guests. Visitors always report that the room becomes freezing before hearing John whisper through the walls.

The Amityville Horror House in Amityville, New York is not in a recreational state yet, but is an honorable mention. It’s the house where then 23-year-old Ronald  “Butch” DeFeo Jr. inexplicably murdered his parents along with his four siblings, earning six consecutive sentences of 25 years to life.
