It is estimated that more than 1 million Americans each year suffer a heart attack—with death resulting in roughly half of those cases. Since February is American Heart Month (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least), CULTURE is doing its readers a public service by providing some basic info related to keeping your heart healthy.

  1. Be mindful of the warning signs of a heart attack. They include feelings of discomfort in the chest, shortness of breath, nausea and light-headedness.

  1. If these types of symptoms occur, dial 9-1-1 and get medical help immediately. Many deaths result because heart attack victims wait too long to seek assistance and treatment.

  1. To reduce the risk of a heart attack, eat a sensible diet (lean meats, fruits and vegetables, etc.) and watch your weight.

  1. Monitor your blood pressure (high blood pressure makes your heart work harder), become physically active and lower your intake of sodium.
