Acting administrator of the DEA, Chuck Rosenberg, has now expressed that cannabis is safer in comparison to drugs such as heroin.“This is not a matter of opinion,” Rosenberg told US News, “It’s far less harmful than heroin and it’s encouraging that the DEA is finally willing to recognize that.” This was clarified recently when he told Huff Post that, “heroin is clearly more dangerous than marijuana.” Until now, Rosenberg’s position on cannabis has been a mystery.

Before Rosenberg, Michelle Leonhart, administrator of the DEA, ignored efforts from Congress and aggressively raided dispensaries and hemp farms. During Leonhart’s reign, the DEA refused to say whether or not cannabis is less dangerous than crack cocaine or heroin. Last year Leonhart chastised POTUS Obama for making the statement that cannabis is less harmful than alcohol. Leonhart was recently forced
to resign
 following alleged crimes of her own and lack of judgement.

The American Scientist identified alcohol as being statistically more physically dangerous than any drug. The report indicates that cannabis is one of the least dangerous drugs. Toxicity levels of common drugs were compared. Cannabis ranked least dangerous out of nineteen common street drugs.

As far as the prosecution of cannabis, Rosenberg told Huff Post he would be cracking down on “heroin, opioids, meth and cocaine, in roughly that order, and marijuana tends to come in at the back of the pack.”
