CNBC is airing a new series special about the cannabis boom in Colorado called, “Marijuana Country: The Cannabis Boom” with Harry Smith as the correspondent. Smith started his broadcasting career in Denver and over the years has reported for A&E, The History Channel, and was a contributor to 48 Hours.

Colorado has the most lenient cannabis laws in the country and CNBC hopes to explore the outcome of this extraordinary social experiment. Smith will profile the most prolific cannabis merchants in Denver, explore the new world of THC-infused edibles and shadow two cannabis dealers who profit from a black market paradigm that remains flourishing despite the new laws.

The original documentary series as well scrutinizes the issue of cannabis in the workplace, as Colorado employers struggle with an open cannabis culture while the backdrop of a zero tolerance drug policy in the office looms. Smith will interview Brandon Coats – a man that was fired from his job when he tested positive for THC – who awaits a State Supreme Court ruling that affects the entire United States. He’ll also examine the plight of ‘medical refugees’, a communion of hundreds of families that moved to Colorado just to obtain medicinal cannabis because their home states would not allow it. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper told CNBC, “When you’re doing this for the first time, there’s no template” with regards to the unparalleled business opportunities and inadvertent consequences of legalizing cannabis.

Hopefully, “Marijuana Country: the Cannabis Boom,” will help emphasis the positive prospects to the newly expanding market.

The series will debut on January 5 at 9PM ET/PT on CNBC.
