[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]W[/dropcap]hile the government shutdown continued into its second month, an online cannabis marketplace often referred to as the “Craigslist of cannabis” pledged to help the 8000,000 workers affected by the shutdown. BudTrader.com offered free medical cannabis to government workers who can’t pay for cannabis due to not getting paid during the shutdown.

The shutdown is due to disagreements between President Donald Trump and Congressional Democrats over his request for over $5.7 billion in funding to build a border wall between Mexico and the U.S.

“I don’t think federal employees are getting enough love and support, in these tough times, we want to extend the offer of a donation of medical cannabis to any federal worker affected by the shutdown,” BudTrader CEO Brad McLaughlin said in a press release.

The company said it was working with a lawyer to ensure that the cannabis donations are legal within California’s cannabis laws. In a Facebook post, BudTrader says all donations will be confidential and donation amounts will be given up to the state’s legal possession amount for adults.

However, it’s unclear how many workers will accept the gracious gift as cannabis  is still illegal at the federal level and drug testing could be stricter in federal workplaces. Although the donations from BudTrader will be confidential, a bill was introduced to Congress last year that would allow federal employees to consume cannabis in legal recreational states without fear of losing their jobs, so government workers won’t have to hide their cannabis use.

BudTrader joins several other companies that have offered free goods and services to struggling government workers during the shutdown. A GoFundMe representative said that federal workers have launched more than 1,500 crowdfunding campaigns during the shutdown.
