[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]T[/dropcap]here’s a convention for everything nowadays. Fans of comic books and movies have Comic-Con, Gamescom for video games, Monsterpalooza for horror fanatics—and CatCon for cat fans. This weekend, CatCon is returning to Southern California and for some, this isn’t overly exciting news (especially if you’re more of a dog person). But for those who own cats, love cats and have considered using cannabis as a treatment for the felines’ medical conditions, there’s one good reason to be enthusiastic.

CatCon includes activities such as meeting celebrity cats (like Morris or Lil BUB), pursuing opportunities to adopt and exploring cat-related products from a variety of vendors. There’s also a number of humans who have made their lives surround cats, such as author Mac Delaney or the people behind the immensely famous @cats_of_instagram page. But unique to this year’s convention, one cannabis-related program will commence. On Sunday, Aug. 5 a seminar entitled “Cannabis and Cats What You Need to Know Meow Sponsored by Merry Jane” will be presented. Featuring cannabis experts Dr. Gary Richter, Dr. Tim Shu, Charles Lozow and Jodi Ziskin as well as Merry Jane Editor-in-Chief Noah Rubin, this seminar will dive into the how cannabis can be used as a treatment for felines. “The potential for treatment of numerous cat ailments with this natural medicine is immense and veterinarians, pet owners, and health entrepreneurs are pushing this conversation forward,” CatCon posted on its website.

The mainstream pet community has already begun to discover how pets can benefit from cannabis, but mainly in use for canine companions—it has taken longer for cannabis to be considered for cats. Last month, CULTURE had the immense honor to interview famous feline Lil Bub’s owner, Mike Bridavsky, who is a strong advocate for hemp-derived CBD medicine. Since taking cannabis, she’s turned a new leaf. Cat lovers everywhere will converge to celebrate their favorite animals, but now cannabis lovers will also be able to glean some interesting information from this unique panel.
