Cannabis Greenhouse Approved in Palm Springs

Palm Springs will soon become a powerhouse of commercial cannabis cultivation with a new greenhouse facility with over 30,000 square feet of grow space. The city of Palm Springs has issued a permit for the first cannabis greenhouse in the city. Palm Springs Safe Access (PSSA) will grow organic cannabis using sustainable cultivation methods.

Under the city’s Comprehensive Medical Cannabis Regulatory Program, a city-issued permit must be obtained before it can open doors. PSSA is a nonprofit and a California Mutual Benefit organization. The organization already operates a dispensary on Gene Autry Trail in Palm Springs. They work closely with SC Laboratories, because Palm Springs requires that dispensaries have their cannabis tested by a laboratory.

The addition of the greenhouse is a big step not only for PSSA, but for Palm Springs. “It’s been a product of a lot of labor and it was very fulfilling to finally get approval after working on this for many years,” Robert Van Roo, president and co-founder of Palm Springs Safe Access, told News Channel 3. The 36,000 square-foot greenhouse will be located in North Palm Springs. The greenhouse will be located on 14 acres of land that the company owns.

Two types of business licenses are available in Palm Springs Medical Cannabis Cooperatives and Collectives (MCCCs) for dispensaries and Medical Cannabis Cultivation Facility (MCCFs) for cultivation. Last year, the Palm Springs City Council increased the number of MCCC permits from four to six. Under the city’s zoning code, dispensaries are prohibited from being located within 250 feet from Palm Canyon Drive, the city’s “main street” and where tourists visit. Dispensaries must also be located at least 250 feet away from residential properties.

In addition to building the greenhouse, PSSA donates to support local charities. They carry over 50 strains which are all independently tested. With the addition of the greenhouse, PSSA is bound to make a notable impact on the community of Palm Springs.
