CultivatedCannabis will be grown in a nuclear-grade Cold War-era bunker, and no, this is not the story of a science fiction spy novel written by a cannabis enthusiast. Now that Germany has legalized cannabis, a company has decided to convert an old bunker into a cannabis cultivation facility.

According to Bunker Pflanzenextrakte, the company behind this idea, the site is located in Memmingerberg Bunker in Buxheim, Bavaria. The bunker is expected to become the largest legal cannabis producer in Germany. One of the benefits of using a bunker like this, besides the obvious benefit of its size, is the fact that the facility has multiple rooms perfect for separating plants during the various stages of the grow cycle.

A video that the company produced to highlight its new facility gives a tour of the entire area and illustrates how the space will be utilized. It also points out all the interesting features of the building, and delves a little bit into its former purposes.

“This whole building [is] very, very safe,” Christoph Rossner, managing director of Bunker Pflanzenextrakte, assures viewers in the video. “These mothers are the gene pool for our whole science,” he continues, referring to the way that the mother plants are especially separated into another room in the bunker.

Ever since Germany first began granting cultivation permits for cannabis, the industry has been steadily expanding and finding new ways. Although it is certainly comical in some ways, utilizing spaces like this in Germany makes a lot of sense, as large and expensive grow facilities require costly building expenses. It isn’t really any different than utilizing abandoned warehouses and factories in the U.S.

So, if you get a chance to try medical cannabis in Germany, it just may have been grown in a Cold War-era bunker.
