[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]W[/dropcap]eddings featuring cannabis bars are quickly becoming a definite trend. One couple in Oregon set the standard, offering guests 13 hand-picked strains, a professional budtender, and a designated driving service.

“It was absolutely beautiful,” said Cathy Marshall after attending a recent wedding that featured a cannabis tent. John Elledge and Whitney Alexanders planned a cannabis tent at their wedding last summer. “We were shocked at the response,” Elledge told WPXI. “People loved it.” The groom says the idea was a smash. “I’m still getting 15 to 20 texts a day from people, saying what a life-changing event that was and what a great experience it was to have the smoke tent there,” Elledge, a full-time cannabis cultivator, added.

The event was organized by wedding organizers, Bridal Bliss. Workers at Bridal Bliss say it’s the first time anyone has asked for a cannabis bar. Amazingly, Bridal Bliss complied. Cannabis smoking at private events is entirely legal in Oregon, anyway.

Bridal Bliss confirmed the event’s popularity. “We posted a couple of photos from that wedding on Instagram and Facebook, and they have just blown up,” Nora Sheils told  WPXI. “They’ve gone viral. People either love it, think it’s a fun idea or hate it and think it’s disgusting.” Bridal bliss says the key to the success was safety. Safety, for Sheils, meant organizing designated drivers for guests.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission warns that companies with a liquor license cannot serve cannabis. “Caterers should be aware that they can’t be bartenders and bud tenders,” OLCC spokesman Mark Pettinger told WPXI. It’s a great new idea and alternative to alcohol for anyone planning a wedding in a state that allows it.
