Hillary ClintonThis year’s election season could quite possibly be the most dramatic and interesting yet. The battle between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton is going to be one for the books, no matter the outcome, and since it’s a big year for cannabis too, it seems that cannabis could actually be the deciding factor for voters when choosing between the two candidates.

New York Magazine recently published an article arguing that if Clinton is able to convince young, left wing voters to vote on Election Day that they believe she’ll have the presidency in the bag, so to speak. In August, Clinton declared support of cannabis, stating that her goal would be to remove it from the Schedule I substance list if elected. New York Magazine also believes that it’s the simple solution of convincing younger voters, specifically millennials, which could be her ticket to win.

Through voicing further support for cannabis, New York Magazine claims that “She would also undermine the perception that she’s an overly cautious politician who’s unwilling to take risky stands on behalf of liberal priorities,” New York Magazine stated. “Even Bernie Sanders, that tribune of millennial radicalism, never advocated, unequivocally, for the nationwide legalization of cannabis. Rather, he called for the federal government to allow the states to set their own laws on the substance’s legality—which is to say, to bring the written law into alignment with our current reality.”

Furthermore, Hillary Clinton could also gain the support of voters through a different avenue of cannabis—criminal justice. Should could talk about the issues with race and cannabis arrests, and take it even further with continuing the conversation about the effectiveness of preventing teenage cannabis use, to gain voter favor.

Cannabis is already well on its way to legalization, with so many states choosing to vote on some sort of medical and/or recreational legislation, so it’s inevitable that there are going to be many victories when it’s time to vote at the polls. It’s only a matter of time that we see whether or not Hillary Clinton and her administration jump onto the cannabis bandwagon too.
