Bars Can’t Seek Social Use Permits in Denver

Social UseAlthough Denverites are excited about the new social use initiative allowed by Initiative 300, there are some odd rules in place that may be daunting to cannabis enthusiasts and business owners.

According to the Denver Post, the new regulations carry with them a very frustrating caveat. Businesses that carry a liquor license will not be able to also apply to have a public use license. Because the two things will be mutually exclusive, bars will not be selling legal cannabis.

While some were expecting this kind of compromise, or were aware of the discussion regarding rules for the amendment, others were taken off guard by this new restriction.

“This doesn’t completely hinder the entire law,” explained Mason Tvert, cannabis activist, when speaking with the Post about the new regulation. “Remember that this whole thing kind of got started with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra fundraiser that was held in an art gallery.”

Tvert was making reference to a 2014 event that got busted due to a cannabis theme, alluding to the idea that the city has come far and that other places besides bars can host cannabis events.

In addition to this newest of unexpected rules, the city already had a few strict regulations when it comes to cannabis use. For example, no cannabis will be sold in stores to be consumed on sight; patrons must bring their own cannabis to areas that allow for public use. Additionally, if a business or restaurant wants to allow for public use, they need to get backing and approval from a neighborhood association.

While all of these obstacles make it a little more challenging to move forward with public use, this is still one of the most forward-thinking public cannabis programs on the planet. With a little bit of time to grow and expand, public use in Denver is sure to be a success.
