t’s easy to write off Nancy Grace as a loud mouth who cares more about ratings than the facts. More often than not, that’s the case. The former prosecutor knows how to get eyeballs on TVs, and her latest debate with rapper 2 Chainz was no exception. While her points ranged from “What about the children?” to “But really, what about the children?!” Here’s the tale of the tape from their “bout over bongs.”

Parents giving their children cannabis

In several video clips, small children are shown being given joints, blunts or bowls to smoke from their guardian. Grace makes the point that in a world of legal cannabis, these people have unlimited access to the drug, just like “orange juice.” Her concern is that this type of child abuse would become rampant post-legalization.

2 Chainz isn’t having it. First, he brings up the fact that this is simply bad parenting, and as a parent of two girls, he takes the governing of his household very seriously. “She was a bonehead,” says 2 Chainz. Second, he suggests there may have been other circumstances involved. Perhaps they had mental issues, had been drinking, or had been using other drugs as well. Lumping everyone under the same umbrella is patently unfair in his eyes. Then, he drops this bombshell on Grace: “I’m not sure if you know, but everybody has the ability to get their hands on pot right now, whether it’s legal or not.”

No matter what, irresponsible people can get access to herb. That’s just not a justification for banning it federally. When they quibble over the number of videos that Grace shows, with 2 Chainz arguing “I’m sure we could find footage of someone giving a child alcohol, WAY more footage, than this little one tape you have of this kid right here,” she busts out yet another clip. Unfortunately, she fails to answer any of the arguments he’s made to that point, simply repeating how two-year-olds shouldn’t smoke cannabis, something anyone can agree with.

Legalizing cannabis is the same as legalizing a lot of drugs

Grace specifically mentions heroin, another Schedule I drug, as an example. Synthetic drugs aren’t the same, 2 Chainz argues, noting that cannabis is a natural, plant-based medicine that actually can help people. While both forget that heroin was synthesized as a pain reliever and morphine substitute, the rapper listed off a number of medical benefits to smoking a little cannabis.

“It helps with anxiety, it helps with being someone who has shows in front of 50-60 thousand people, have to do meet and greets, and be friendly and cordial to thousands of fans,” he notes, also talking about how it stimulates appetite and helps him sleep. He also points out that there’s never been an overdose from cannabis, something Grace doesn’t bother to acknowledge.

There are financial benefits to legalization

2 Chainz hits this part hard, arguing there are a number of societal costs that also bear a burden on the taxpayers. If that money wasn’t being wasted on the criminal justice element of cannabis —not to mention the ability for students to get loans for college—we could fix things like “pot holes and stadiums.” All Grace hears is “taxpayers” and repeats herself several times while asking for clarification.

He’s armed and ready with a very specific example: One that happened to him. When a grinder on his bus (because the cops smelled cannabis) came up with 0.01 grams of cannabis residue on it, he was arrested and booked for it. It wound up going to trial, then the charges were ultimately dropped because the grinder had been packed by his security guard. When they charged the security guard, the state ultimately lost their case. 2 Chainz argues that’s a criminal misuse of money by the prosecutors. Grace agrees.
