[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]C[/dropcap]onsidering the clitoris is the only organ in the body whose sole purpose is sexual pleasure, it’s not surprising that the female orgasm is a big deal. Now, a new study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has determined something many cannabis consumers have known all along—cannabis improves sex and orgasms for women.

A total of 373 female patients over the age of 18 took part in a confidential sexual health survey during the study period of March 2016 through February 2017. The conclusion of the study showed a positive correlation between sexual pleasure and cannabis use. “Marijuana appears to improve satisfaction with orgasm. A better understanding of the role of the endocannabinoid system in women is important, because there is a paucity of literature, and it could help lead to development of treatments for female sexual dysfunction,” according to the study’s text.

Out of the patients studied, 127 or 34 percent of women reported to have consumed cannabis prior to having sex. A majority of these women provided positive results from the cannabis consumption like improvement in orgasms, an increase in sex drive and less pain. Any change in lubrication was not reported by the majority. The cannabis consumers reported more satisfying orgasms in comparison with the women who did not consume or consumed infrequently.

According to the study, the positive effects that endocannabinoids can have on sex is not a new topic of interest for modern medicine. “Endocannabinoids, which are structurally similar to marijuana, are known to help regulate sexual function. The cannabinoid receptor, discovered in the 1990s, has been mapped to several areas of the brain that play a role in sexual function.3 Cannabinoids and endocannabinoids interact with the hormones and neurotransmitters that affect sexual behavior,” according to the studies introduction. Similar to this particular study, It’s clear there still is a lot to be learned about cannabis and sex. The introduction continued, “Although these interactions have not been clearly illuminated, some studies in rodents have helped to clarify the relationship between cannabinoids and the hormones and neurotransmitters that affect sexual behavior.”

In 1984, The Journal of Sex Research found that two-thirds of surveyed adults who consumed cannabis reported enhanced sensations of touch and an increase in sexual pleasure and satisfaction. Hopefully this report will open new doors to further research to better help us understand the kismet relationship between cannabis and sexual pleasure.
