[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]H[/dropcap]ot toddies, plain and simple, are a combination of spirits, honey, hot water and spices served warm. But it has a rather interesting history. The word “toddy” is believed to go back to the colonial times when India was a British colony.  The widespread belief is that the word is borrowed from the Hindi word tari, which roughly translates to palm wine made from the fermented sap of toddy palm. But the hot toddies that is celebrated in America on National Hot Toddy Day, observed on Jan. 11 is supposed to have originated in Scotland and Ireland.

The idea behind the drink being served hot is to help cure a cold. Another popular belief is that the drink’s credit goes to Robert Bentley Todd for his prescription of a hot drink of brandy, Canella (white cinnamon), sugar syrup, and water.

So how did the drink seep into American culture? Well, legend has it that during the Revolutionary War, American colonists drank rounds of toddies as a form of “liquid courage” to muster the nerves to fight.

Can a drink’s history be more convoluted and diverse? Well, let’s try and appropriate it a bit more this National Hot Toddy Day to celebrate its multicultural diversity! Here’s a simple yet very fulfilling recipe that takes this Scottish classic and gives it a canna-friendly-twist! This version will keep you warm and snug throughout the cold winter night and hopefully help you sleep better. Toddies are traditionally made with whiskey, hence the CULTURE team has tried to retain its original sweetness in this infused adaptation.
