“celeb-stoners” like Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus shouldn’t have all the
fun.

More
Americans than ever are enjoying new heights of sexual—and cannabis—liberation.
The collapse of both cannabis prohibition and the U.S.’ anti-sex moralism
allows kinksters and cannaseurs to come out of their closets—loudly.

Cannabis
for sex is pretty old-school. Ancient Ayurvedic medicine manuals call it an
aphrodisiac, notes The Science of Marijuana (Oxford Press, 2007). The 2014 book Handbook of Cannabis (Oxford
Press) reports hemp is considered a gift from the Hindu god of eroticism,
Shiva, given to man to “maintain their sexual excitement.” The US Dispensatory
of 1854 lists cannabis as an “aphrodisiac,” and modern science backs up the
ancients.

The
active ingredients in cannabis plug into our nerve cells like keys into a lock,
altering signaling. Erectile dysfunction, arousal and desire disorders “possess
the very realistic possibility” of being treated using cannabinoids, the Annual
Review of Sex Research found in 2012. Daily cannabis users tend to have more
partners in the previous year, a 2009 study found—yet fewer domestic fights, a
2014 study found.

Enhancing
sex with cannabis is no sure thing, though. “While some users claim that it
greatly increases their sexual desire, others experience the converse effect,”
University of California, Santa Barbara researchers summarize.

Mileage may vary. Here are some
rules of the road:

Aim
for the Middle

Veteran
smokers who want to try something new in the bedroom and have a selection of
flowers should deploy a mild, near equal indica-sativa hybrid. Full indicas are
too sedative for most people. Full sativas can be too racy and psychedelic for
novices.

Middle-of-the-road
strains are most likely to be relaxing without putting you to sleep or spacing
you out, sexperts say. Start with a medium-strength, nice-smelling floral
strain like an outdoor Blue Dream, Cherry Pie, Juicy Fruit, or Jilly Bean.
Dutch Treat and XJ-13 work as well.

– Keep It Simple, Sexpert

As
if condoms weren’t clumsy enough—a full-on dab rig drags down the mood.

“You
can just bring a joint into the bedroom,” said Mamakind, author of 2011 book Sex
Pot: The Marijuana Lover’s Guide to Getting’ It On
.

Keep
a suitable “pre-roll” ready to pop out when the moment is right, she said.
Joints are much easier to titrate than edibles, and simpler than most vapes.

While
amateurs hope to get laid, veterans schedule it. A bite—say 10-15 mg THC—of
sativa-dominant chocolate taken two hours before the deed “tends to enhance
libido,” said Elise McDonough, author of Marijuana for Everybody. “You’ll
feel really warm inside—it’s a very content feeling, you’re very comfortable
and very in touch with your body.”

Vanilla
Flavored?

Lacking
experience? There’s still ways to fire things up. A full-body weed rubdown is
pretty effective foreplay. Cannabis-infused topicals are an exploding trend in Washington,
and are catching on everywhere. Cannabis’s active ingredients applied to the
skin cannot get you “high,” but pre-clinical and user reports show cannabis-infused
massage oil and lotion relaxes muscles, eases tension, and relieves pain.

 Going
Deeper

For the bold and kinky, Mamakind recommends the
latest infused lubes like Cali Love, Sexy Times Massage Oil, or other infused
lubricants. Just keep in mind—oil-based lube compromises condoms. An alternative
liquid, glycerin, “does take cannabis quite well,” she said, but can irritate
some people. Everyone is different, and that’s part of the fun—finding what
works for you and your partner. It’s best to keep it as organic and natural as
possible. Just remember, medicating with cannabis through your vagina or your
anus can intensify the effects of cannabis, so be very careful and go slow.
