Utah Senator Tries Cannabis Live on Social Media

[dropcap class=”kp-dropcap”]I[/dropcap]n a Facebook live video on Oct. 20, Utah Sen. Jim Dabakis tried a cannabis-infused edible for the first time at a Las Vegas, Nevada dispensary, stating that he is no longer a “marijuana virgin.” While lawmakers who have never tried cannabis regularly write laws controlling the cultivation, sales and distribution of the plant, Dabakis displayed a level of integrity by taking it upon himself to be the guinea pig.

In anticipation of Utah’s vote on Proposition 2 on Nov. 6 which would legalize medical cannabis, Sen. Dabakis drove to Las Vegas and went to the NuLeaf Las Vegas dispensary. “Until this moment, I was a marijuana virgin,” Debakis said as he tried a single infused gummy bear. “Ending that now. At least one legislator ought to try the stuff before we change the law!” In the video, he ate half of the gummy bear and saved the other half for later, so there was probably not any significant effect.

The Democratic senator said it’s “no big deal” after eating the edible. In a follow-up Facebook live video on Oct. 22, Dabakis circled back and said, “I am fine. I survived the Cannabis Gummy Bear! And, I have an opinion.” Dabakis reaffirmed his former position that cannabis is not a big deal.

Proposition 2 would legalize medical cannabis in Utah for a number of qualifying conditions. A bill being sold as a compromise bill between Proposition 2 supporters and opponents would legalize medical cannabis, but under a more restrictive system of regulations. The compromise bill would create a pharmacy system instead of private dispensaries.

Dabakis’ move suggests that he is serious about medical cannabis reform in Utah, and that he’s willing to do whatever it takes to prove a point.
